Started after watching my grandmother, whose eyesight is poor, spend more than five minutes on the paper bus timetable every time. It covers the 7000-series routes (7000, 7001, 7002) linking Gapyeong and Seorak terminals with Jamsil station. Pick the departure and arrival stops and an arrival or departure time, and it shows the nearest bus, with the full timetable split into weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays (holidays).

Problems and solutions

Problem

It started when I watched my grandmother take more than five minutes, every time, to find a bus on a paper timetable. Routes 7000, 7001 and 7002 between Gapyeong/Seorak Terminal and Jamsil Station run on different routes and schedules, so finding a bus you could catch at the time you wanted meant checking and comparing each route's timetable one by one.

Judgement

I judged that simply moving the paper timetable onto a screen would not change how people search. Instead of having users compare timetables themselves, I restructured it so they only pick the departure and arrival stops and a time, and the app finds the nearest bus.

Solution

Pick the departure and arrival stops and a departure or arrival time, and the app surfaces the single bus closest to that time first. I merged the 7000, 7001 and 7002 timetables and applied the weekday, Saturday, and Sunday/holiday schedules automatically by date. The full timetable sits as secondary information, expanded only when needed.

Result

Simplified reading and comparing several routes' timetables into a flow where choosing an origin, a destination and a time shows the nearest bus.
